This collection contains records generated by the Highland Hospital, including some material generated under its former name, Hahnemann Hospital. There are annual reports, minutes of both the Board of Directors and the Hospital Auxiliary, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other records pertaining to the hospital. This collection also contains the papers of Dr. John R. Williams, the first doctor in the United States to prescribe insulin for a patient. Joseph Biegler founded Highland Hospital in 1889 as a six-bed hospital. Originally called Hahneman Homeopathic Hospital, it was known as the "rebel on the hill" because of its then-radical conviction that patients should be cared for as people, instead of as interesting specimens of illnesses or collections of symptoms.
